Where in the World (730)

Good news and then sad news

This week’s “Where in the World…” marks 14 years of the distorted city image puzzles. Puzzle number one began a sequence in September 2012 that has continued until today. That was the year of the London Olympics, our late Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the opening of the Shard which has since helped readers identify London and Barack Obama was re-elected as President of the United States.

About edition eight Tim (@timofnewbury) join in and has been regular ever since. He is the reader who has been with WITW the longest, closely followed a few weeks later by Atul (@pixodentist) as runner-up.

The title of champion puzzler goes to Jackie (@jackiesjourneys) who has the longest unbroken run of correct answers at exactly 300 – quite a milestone. And it remains unbroken.

Thank you for sticking around for so long it’s been a pleasure setting a new WITW every week.

Now for the sad news. After 14 years I am winding up “Where in the World…” This week’s will be the last one. I have enjoyed the challenge of setting a new challenge every week but have decided to bring it to an end. I will not disappear completely, other challenges await, and this website will be around for sometime yet. There will be occasional puzzles to solve so do keep visiting.

This website is long overdue a newsletter that will highlight travel tips, destinations and experiences and in that monthly newsletter there will be travel related puzzles, maybe even an occasional “Where in the World…”

Next week, when the answer to Where in the World (730) is published there will be a form to sign up for the aforementioned newsletter.

It’s not goodbye but au revoir… See you next week.

Answer to edition 730

And now to the business of publishing the answer to last week’s puzzle. Most people identified the distorted image as a mosque which narrows down the possibilities somewhat. It is believed that this mosque is the first one built in Islam and reputedly built by The Prophet Muhammad himself. The distorted image shows part of the Quba Mosque in the city of Madinah (Medina), Saudi Arabia

Last week's winners

Congratulations to those who identified the distorted city from Where in the World (729) as Madinah (Medina), Saudi Arabia:  Tim (@timofnewbury) and Jackie (@jackiesjourneys).

Well done.

This week's "Where in the World..."

This a is a regenerated area of a waterfront part of the city to be identified. Many of the world’s waterfronts fell derelict as trade shifted and harbours and ports were no longer served their purpose. Developers reimagined these spaces but which one is this and in which city? Remember it’s the name of the city of which it is part. Good luck
