Answer to edition 723
One thing I learned this week was not to trust captions without fact-checking. The caption I relied on told me the mosque and minaret was in the city of Amman, Jordan. When even my top regular puzzler couldn’t identify the city I did some research of my own. During this research I learned a lot about Islamic architecture. The dark and light stripes are lnown as “ablaq” style and the type of minaret is from the Mamluk era. However, I could not find any definitive corroborative evidence to identify the building or city.
That being the case I will accept either Damascus or Amman. Personally I favour Damascus because I discovered an older photo of a very similar minaret covered in a climbing plant that obscured many of the details.
