Answer to edition 696
The incomplete bridge is the biggest clue to the identity of this week’s city. Incomplete, broken or unfinished it leads to nowhere. However, it was made famous by a children’s nursery rhyme usually sung in French.
30 years ago I danced with my 10 year old daughter on this very bridge while my son danced with his grandma.
“Sur le Pont d’Avignon” as the rhyme is titled is a French children’s song about dancing in circles, with verses for gentlemen, ladies, soldiers, and musicians, each doing specific gestures like bowing or saluting, as they dance “all around” on the bridge.
The building in the background is the Popes Palace, the seat of the papacy during the 14th century. This confirms that the city is indeed Avignon.

Congratulations to those who identified the distorted city from Where in the World (696) as the French city of Avignon: Jackie (@jackiesjourneys), Rebecca (@rebhalp), Tim (@timofnewbury) and Atul (@pixodentist).
Well done everyone.
This week's "Where in the World..."
Despite the modern buildings present on the skyline this is the more traditional side of the city architecturally speaking. Focusing your attention on the ring of warm orange lit buildings is likely to be the most helpful in identifying the city. Good luck.
