11 years and counting
September 2, 2012, was the day I posted WITW for the first time. It didn’t even get the honour of a number and it wasn’t a city to be identified but a whole country. That makes today the 11th anniversary of “Where in the World…”
I have enjoyed finding images and sometimes taking them myself, distorting them and watching the answers come in.
Atul (@pixodentist) and Tim @(timofnewbury) have stuck with it almost from the start. Jackie (@jackiesjourneys) joined in the fun later but achieved the longest unbroken run of correct answers and is approaching a new record-breaking run of correct answers. Thank you to all those who take part whether you are new to the weekly challenge or a long-standing fan.
By way of a small celebration, there is a prize this week of a £15 Amazon gift card. As usual, all correct answers will be entered into a draw and the first one drawn will win the prize. Competition closes at 10:00pm [BST] Wednesday, September 13, 2023
Answer to edition 574
Firstly, an explanation from a photographer. Photographs taken with a telephoto lens do tend to distort the perspective somewhat. This phenomenon is called foreshortening and tends to make objects appear closer to others than it does to the naked eye. The setting sun is the give away as it appears much larger in relation to the bridge and hills.
This seemed to confuse many readers as they felt the bridge was too close for the foreground to be the city they thought it was. Readers correctly identified the bridge as the Akashi-Kaikyo, until last year the largest single-span suspension bridge.
In the middle distance, the eagle-eyed will spot the cranes of a port. This is Kobe, the port city of Osaka which is the collection of high-rise buildings featuring large in the distorted image. The view is from Osaka across Osaka Bay.
Technically, there are two cities to identify. I will accept either and there is extra kudos for those who managed to identify both.
Last week's winners
Congratulations to those who identified the distorted cities from Where in the World (548) as Osaka and/or Kobe, Japan: Atul (@pixodentist), Tim (@timofnewbury), Jackie (@jackiesjourneys) and Rebecca (@rebhalp).
Well done everyone.
This week's "Where in the World..."
The style of architecture and the opulence of the building should give you an idea of which region the building is located in. There is also another very prominent clue that will help.
Good luck and remember there is a prize on offer. You have to be in it to win it.
