Answer to edition 567
In last week’s “Where in the World…” the most obvious feature is the castle on the hilltop overlooking the city. There are also several spires in the Baroque style in the city itself. If you identified the castle (or schloss) as Hohensalzburg Fortress then you will be able to also identify the city as Salzburg.

Tips for Visiting Salzburg
Salzburg, the fourth-largest city in Austria, is a charming destination that attracts travellers with its rich history, stunning architecture, and captivating natural beauty. Nestled amidst the breathtaking Austrian Alps, Salzburg offers a unique blend of culture and outdoor adventures. Whether you’re a music enthusiast, a history buff, or a nature lover, Salzburg has something special to offer. Here are some tips and advice for making the most of your visit to this enchanting city.
1. Embrace the Music-Filled Heritage:
Salzburg is renowned as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and for being the setting of the beloved musical, “The Sound of Music.” To immerse yourself in the city’s musical heritage, start your journey at Mozart’s Birthplace and Residence. Here, you can explore exhibits showcasing his life and works. Don’t miss attending a classical music concert at one of the city’s historic venues, such as the Mirabell Palace or Salzburg Cathedral. Check the schedule of the renowned Salzburg Festival if you happen to visit during the summer months for an unforgettable cultural experience.
2. Marvel at Salzburg’s Architectural Gems:
The city boasts a plethora of architectural wonders, and a must-visit is the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Perched atop a hill, it offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding landscape. Stroll through the charming Altstadt (Old Town), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and admire the intricate Baroque architecture of buildings like Salzburg Cathedral and the Residenz. Take a leisurely walk along the Salzach River and cross the Makartsteg footbridge adorned with love locks, adding a touch of romance to your visit.
3. Explore the Natural Beauty:
Salzburg is not only about history and culture but also about embracing nature’s splendor. Head to the Mirabell Gardens, a stunningly manicured space, perfect for a peaceful walk or a relaxing picnic. For a more immersive natural experience, venture into the Untersberg mountain range for hiking trails suitable for all skill levels. If you’re an avid nature lover, take a day trip to the Salzkammergut region, known for its serene lakes and picturesque landscapes.
4. Indulge in Salzburg’s Culinary Delights:
No visit to Salzburg is complete without savouring its culinary offerings. Taste traditional Austrian dishes like Wiener Schnitzel, Sachertorte, and Strudel at local eateries and cafes. Don’t forget to visit the bustling farmers’ markets to sample fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and other regional delights.
Salzburg is a treasure trove of history, culture, and natural beauty. Either embrace the musical heritage, marvel at the architectural wonders, immerse yourself in nature or savour the delicious cuisine. Whether you’re a solo traveller or on a family holiday, Salzburg promises an unforgettable experience.
