Answer to edition 565
There were at least two clues present in the distorted image from last week’s “Where in the World…”. The first is an Ottoman style mosque with a single minaret. Although this city has a number of mosques in this style this is the only one with the single minaret. The stadium in the distorted image should give a further clue as there are few stadiums with just such a view.
A little research reveals that the mosque is likely to be at the centre of the Ottoman Empire along with numerous others and the one near a football stadium is the Mirimah Sultan Mosque (which, by the way, was commissioned by a woman) which is found in Fatih district, Istanbul.
Discover Istanbul
Istanbul, the vibrant and enchanting city that straddles two continents, is a destination like no other. With its rich history, breathtaking architecture, and melting pot of cultures, it is a place that captivates the hearts and minds of all who visit. From the moment you set foot in Istanbul, you are transported to a world where ancient traditions blend seamlessly with modern life, creating an atmosphere that is both familiar and exotic. Here are just a few reasons why Istanbul should be at the top of your travel bucket list.
Wander through the bustling streets of the historic Sultanahmet district. Here, you’ll find iconic landmarks such as the majestic Hagia Sophia, a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture, and the grandeur of the Blue Mosque. Lose yourself in the labyrinthine corridors of the Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world, where the scents of spices and the vibrant colours of Turkish carpets ignite your senses.
Istanbul is a city that effortlessly marries tradition with innovation. Modern skyscrapers coexist with ancient palaces, and trendy cafes sit side by side with traditional tea houses. Indulge in the tantalising flavours of Turkish cuisine, from mouthwatering kebabs to delicate pastries dripping with honey. Sip a cup of Turkish tea while taking in panoramic views of the Bosphorus, the strait that connects Europe and Asia, and feel the energy of a city that bridges two continents.
Beyond its historical and architectural wonders, Istanbul is a cultural hub that pulsates with art, music, and dance. Visit the Istanbul Modern Museum to explore the works of contemporary Turkish artists, or immerse yourself in the mystical melodies of Turkish classical music at a traditional concert. Be mesmerised by the swirling movements of the whirling dervishes, an ancient Sufi practice that is as captivating as it is spiritual.
Istanbul is also a city of contrasts, where ancient traditions meet a cosmopolitan lifestyle. Discover trendy neighbourhoods like Beyoglu, where hip cafes, art galleries, and boutiques line the streets. Experience the vibrant nightlife as you dance the night away at rooftop bars overlooking the glittering city skyline. Indulge in a traditional Turkish bath, a soothing and rejuvenating experience that has been cherished for centuries.
Whether you are a history enthusiast, an art lover, a foodie, or simply a traveler seeking new experiences, you will discover something to delight in Istanbul.
