Where in the World (560)

Answer to edition 559

In last week’s “Where in the World…” the best clue to the identity of the city is the shape of the mountains. A secondary clue is the name on one of the buildings – Cafe Grace. Search for it on Google and you will find it is in the same city as the one that sits beneath the flat-topped mountain, Table Mountain. The city is of course Cape Town.

About Cape Town

Cape Town, located on the southwestern tip of South Africa, is a vibrant and diverse city that captivates visitors with its stunning natural beauty, rich history, and unique cultural blend. Nestled between the majestic Table Mountain and the azure waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Town offers an array of experiences that cater to every traveller’s interests.

One of the most iconic landmarks in Cape Town is Table Mountain. Rising over 1,000 meters above the city, this flat-topped mountain offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. Visitors can hike to the top or take a cable car ride to witness the cityscape, ocean, and sprawling suburbs from above. Table Mountain is also home to a diverse range of plant and animal species, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and hikers.

Cape Town’s coastline is equally alluring, with pristine white sandy beaches stretching along the Atlantic Seaboard. Whether it’s the lively Camps Bay beach, the tranquil Clifton beaches, or the surfers’ paradise of Muizenberg, there is a beach for everyone. The crystal-clear waters and picturesque scenery make Cape Town a popular destination for sunbathing, swimming, and various water activities.

Beyond its natural wonders, Cape Town boasts a rich history and cultural heritage. The city’s colorful neighborhoods, such as Bo-Kaap, showcase the vibrant Cape Malay culture with their brightly painted houses and cobblestone streets. The historic Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years, is a poignant reminder of the country’s struggle for freedom and democracy.

Cape Town is also a culinary delight, offering a fusion of flavors from around the world. From traditional African dishes to international cuisine, the city’s diverse culinary scene caters to all tastes. The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, a bustling harbour area, is a hub of restaurants, cafes, and shops where visitors can indulge in a range of delectable treats while enjoying beautiful views of the waterfront.

For wine enthusiasts, Cape Town is a gateway to the renowned Cape Winelands. Just a short drive from the city, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl offer picturesque vineyards and world-class wine-tasting experiences. Visitors can explore the scenic vineyards, sample award-winning wines, and savour exquisite farm-to-table cuisine.

Cape Town’s unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage makes it a destination that continues to inspire and captivate travellers from around the world.

This week's "Where in the World..."

This week it is the style of architecture that will help identify the city. Modern and quirky with clean lines it reflects the city itself. There are other clues but the odd-shaped structure that dominates the image is your best clue to the city’s identity. Good luck
