Where in the World (558)

Answer to edition 557

This week’s “Where in the World…” features a building often featured in news reports in the 1990s. The city in which it is located was under siege for several months and the building sustained damage during the shelling. For those who don’t remember news reports so far back will have to do a little research into the style of architecture and the three domes.

It is the Emperor’s Mosque in the city of Sarajevo.

About Sarajevo

Sarajevo, the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a city steeped in history and rich cultural heritage. Known as the “Jerusalem of Europe,” Sarajevo is a melting pot of diverse cultures, religions, and traditions. From its breathtaking architecture to its captivating historical sites, Sarajevo offers visitors a truly unique and memorable experience.

One of the must-visit attractions in Sarajevo is the historic district known as Baščaršija. This vibrant area is a maze of narrow streets filled with traditional Ottoman-style shops, cafes, and restaurants. Stroll through the bustling streets, soak in the aromas of freshly brewed Bosnian coffee, and sample local delicacies like cevapi (grilled meat sausages) and burek (savory pastry filled with meat or cheese).

For history enthusiasts, a visit to the Sarajevo War Tunnel is a must. This underground tunnel played a crucial role during the Bosnian War and served as a lifeline for the city. Explore the tunnel and gain insight into the hardships faced by the people of Sarajevo during the war.

The city is also home to numerous museums that offer a glimpse into Sarajevo’s past. The Sarajevo Historical Museum showcases the city’s history, from its founding to the present day. The Museum of Sarajevo 1878-1918 provides a detailed account of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, an event that triggered World War I.

To immerse yourself in the city’s religious heritage, visit the Emperor Mosque. This impressive Ottoman-style mosque dates back to the 16th century and is one of the largest in the Balkans. Take a moment to admire the intricate architecture and serene atmosphere.

For a panoramic view of the city, head to the Yellow Fortress (Zuta Tabija). Located on a hilltop, this fortress offers stunning vistas of Sarajevo and is especially beautiful at sunset.

Sarajevo is also a great destination for nature lovers. Take a trip to the nearby Olympic Mountains and enjoy activities such as hiking, skiing, and snowboarding. The beautiful Miljacka River that flows through the city is perfect for a leisurely stroll along its banks or a romantic boat ride.

Sarajevo is a city that effortlessly combines history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you’re interested in exploring its rich past, sampling delicious Bosnian cuisine, or enjoying outdoor activities, Sarajevo offers a little something for everyone.
