Where in the World (556)

Answer to edition 556

In last week’s “Where in the World…” the identity was in the detail. Despite thinking that it was Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris I discovered, thanks to one of my readers, that the details didn’t match up. The top of the steeple. the windows and the top of the visible tower did not match up with Notre Dame.

It was an easy mistake to make as I discovered. A well-known photographic library had stock photos captioned as Notre Dame when they should have been Saint Croix, Orleans, a city also in France.

My apologies for misleading you at the beginning.

About Orleans

Orleans is a city in north-central France, situated on the banks of the Loire River. It is the capital of the Loiret department and the Centre-Val de Loire region. The city is known for its rich history, culture, and architecture, attracting thousands of visitors yearly.

Orleans was founded by the Romans in the first century BC and was named after the nearby tribe of the Aurelii. The city played a significant role in the Hundred Years’ War, serving as the site of Joan of Arc’s famous victory over the English in 1429. To this day, the city honours the memory of Joan of Arc, with many monuments and memorials dedicated to her.

One of the city’s most prominent landmarks is the Cathédrale Sainte-Croix d’Orléans, a magnificent Gothic-style cathedral that was built between the 13th and 16th centuries. The cathedral is renowned for its stained glass windows dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries and its impressive organ, one of the largest in France.

Another notable attraction in Orleans is the Musée des Beaux-Arts, which houses an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts from the 15th to the 21st century. The museum’s most famous exhibit is a painting by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres titled “La Grande Odalisque,” which is considered one of the finest examples of French Neoclassical art.

In addition to its cultural attractions, Orleans is also known for its vibrant nightlife and culinary scene. The city is home to many lively bars and restaurants, where visitors can sample delicious local cuisine and wine.

Orleans is a fascinating city with a rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture making it a must-visit destination for anyone travelling to France. Whether you’re interested in art, history or just want to soak up the atmosphere of a charming French city, Orleans is definitely worth a visit.

Last week's winners

Congratulations to Jackie (@jackiesjourneys) who noticed the windows were not that of Notre Dame and identified the distorted city from Where in the World (556) as Orleans, France.

This week's "Where in the World..."

This week is another place of worship and I am certain it is not in Paris, or Orleans for that matter. Once again the answer is in the detail of the building. It is that will help you identify the city.

Good luck
