Where in the World (555)

Answer to edition 555

In the distorted version of the image from last week’s “Where in the World…”, the flag is missing from the photograph but the words over the door identify the country as well as the structure. It is the memorial to all those sailors who died aboard the USS Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. If you didn’t know already a quick search on Google or Bing would reveal that the city it is identified with is Honolulu.

Well done everyone.

Honolulu

Honolulu, located on the island of Oahu, is the capital city of Hawaii and a major tourist destination. Known for its beautiful beaches, warm weather, and vibrant culture, Honolulu offers visitors a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and modern amenities.

One of the main attractions of Honolulu is Waikiki Beach, a world-famous stretch of white sand beach that has been a popular destination for tourists for decades. Here, visitors can swim, surf, or simply relax under the sun while enjoying the stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. In addition to Waikiki, Honolulu is also home to a number of other beaches, each with its own unique charm and appeal.

Beyond its beaches, Honolulu is also steeped in history and culture. The city is home to numerous historical sites, including the USS Arizona Memorial, which honors the lives lost during the Pearl Harbor attack of 1941. Other notable historical sites in Honolulu include Iolani Palace, the former residence of the Hawaiian monarchy, and the Bishop Museum, which showcases the history and culture of Hawaii.

In addition to its history, Honolulu is also home to a thriving arts and culture scene. The city is home to a number of museums, galleries, and theaters, including the Honolulu Museum of Art and the Hawaii Theatre Center. Honolulu is also home to numerous festivals and events throughout the year, including the annual Honolulu Festival, which celebrates the city’s rich cultural heritage.

Foodies will also find plenty to love in Honolulu, which is home to a vibrant culinary scene that draws inspiration from the diverse cultures that make up Hawaii. Visitors can sample traditional Hawaiian dishes like poi and kalua pig, or enjoy more modern fare like poke bowls and gourmet burgers.

Finally, Honolulu is also a great base for exploring the rest of the island of Oahu, which is home to a wide range of natural and cultural attractions. Visitors can hike to the top of Diamond Head, explore the North Shore’s legendary surf breaks, or visit the Polynesian Cultural Center to learn more about the cultures of the Pacific.

Honolulu is about a lot more than Pearl Harbour, beaches and Polynesian Culture. It is well worth considering for your next holiday destination.

This week's "Where in the World..."

The building in this image is a well known and iconic structure in the city to be identified. However, be warned it currently does not look like it does here. The distorted image was photographed a few years ago. Identify the building correctly and you will be able to identify the city.

It was bound to happen eventually. I am only surprised it took 555 editions. For reasons I won’t go into the distorted image for this week was captioned wrongly as Notre Dame in Paris. From the viewpoint where the picture was taken there is a remarkable similarity which was further compounded by my comment in the text above.

Jackie from @JackiesJourneys however noticed that some of the details did not match those on Notre Dame, Paris. Jackie has been taking part in “Where in the World…” for year’s and has only ever got one wrong so when she doubts I check it out.

It took me a while but I did find which city the distorted city you can find this cathedral and it is not Paris. If you identified it as Paris then you will need to look again. The windows, the spire and the top of the visible tower are different to Notre Dame, Paris.

Good luck and my apologies for the mix up.
