Where in the World (552)

Answer to edition 551

Although the two identical prominent structures visible in last week’s “Where in the World…” were intentionally built in the Venetian style they are not, as the hill in the background suggests, in Venice. The other big clue is the signage on top of one of the buildings which suggests that the city is in Catalonia, Spain. There are also a couple of Catalan flags in the centre of the distorted image.

Together these clues identify the city as the Catalan capital, Barcelona.

Barcelona

Barcelona, city of Gaudi

Barcelona is a beautiful city located on the northeast coast of Spain and is the capital of Catalonia. It is the second-largest city in Spain, after Madrid, and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. Barcelona has a rich history, culture, and architecture that attracts millions of visitors each year.

One of the most famous attractions in Barcelona is the stunning basilica, Sagrada Familia, which is still under construction after more than a century of work. Designed by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi, it is an absolute must-visit site that attracts thousands of visitors every day. Other popular Gaudi-designed landmarks include the whimsical Park Güell, the colourful Casa Batlló, and the stunning Casa Milà.

Barcelona is also famous for its beautiful beaches. The most popular one is the Barceloneta beach, which is located just a few minutes from the city center. The beach is lined with many restaurants and bars, making it the perfect place to spend a day in the sun with friends and family. Other beaches such as Bogatell Beach and Mar Bella Beach are also popular among locals and tourists.

The city also has a vibrant art and culture scene, with many museums and galleries such as the Picasso Museum, Joan Miro Foundation, and the National Art Museum of Catalonia. The Gothic Quarter, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, is home to many beautiful buildings and museums such as the Barcelona City History Museum, the Museum of Catalan Modernism, and the Museum of Chocolate.

Barcelona is also known for its delicious food and drink scene, with many bars and restaurants serving traditional Spanish dishes such as paella, tapas, and seafood. The Boqueria Market, located in the heart of the city, is a great place to explore and taste local foods and products.

Finally, Barcelona is also home to one of the most successful soccer clubs in the world, FC Barcelona. Their home stadium, Camp Nou, is the largest soccer stadium in Europe and is a must-visit site for any soccer fan.

In conclusion, Barcelona is a fascinating city with a rich history, culture, and architecture that attracts millions of visitors each year. Whether you’re interested in art, culture, food, or sports, the city has something for everyone.
