Low-cost carrier or full-service carrier?

A low-cost carrier or a full-service carrier?

Low-cost carriers sometimes referred to as budget airlines, are popular because of their low prices. However, flying with these airlines often means sacrificing comfort and convenience. In this article, we’ll take a look at 6 benefits of not flying with low-cost carriers.

Increased comfort

Generally, low-cost carriers have less legroom

When you fly with a low-cost carrier, you often have to pay extra for more legroom. If travelling with a partner, family or friends and you would like to be seated together then most low-cost carriers, you have to pay extra for that too. By opting for a full-service airline, you are more likely to enjoy comfortable seating where and with who you want and more legroom without additional cost.

Better food and drinks

Budget airlines always have limited food and drink options for which they charge. These are often poor quality and overpriced. Full-service airlines will be more likely to include even a minimal snack and drink as part of the ticket price. This very much depends on the airline and the route as some may provide a more substantial snack than others.

Greater baggage allowances

Budget airlines often have strict baggage allowances. Some allow you no more than a briefcase/laptop bag or handbag and charge fees for any extra checked or carry-on bags. Full-service airlines generally have more generous baggage allowances, so you can pack more without having to worry about paying extra fees.

Better customer service

Full-service airlines typically have better customer service, with more staff available to assist you with any issues you may have. Low-cost airlines, on the other hand, often have limited staff and resources, which results in longer wait times and less personal attention.

More flexibility with ticket changes

Low-cost carriers often have strict policies regarding ticket changes and cancellations, with fees that can be as much as the original ticket cost. Full-service airlines are often more flexible with ticket changes, offering more lenient policies and lower fees.

I recall one particular low-cost carrier wanting to charge £45.99 per person per flight to change the ticket. As there were two of us that amounted to £183.96 to change two £27.99 tickets.

Less stress

Flying with a low-cost airline can be a stressful experience. By choosing a full-service airline, you can avoid the long lines, cramped seating and limited amenities that are the hallmark of low-cost carriers. Enjoy a more relaxed and comfortable flying experience and arrive at your destination refreshed and ready to go.

The choice is yours

While low-cost carriers may appear to offer lower ticket prices, these often come with trade-offs that can impact your overall travel experience. From cramped seating to limited amenities, and strict baggage allowances, choosing a full-service airline may be the better option if comfort, convenience, and flexibility are important to you. Ultimately, it’s up to you to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of each option and make the decision that best fits your travel needs and budget.
