Answer to edition 524
The crescent atop the main building in the distorted photograph places the city in an Islamic region. The black structure near the centre of the distorted image is recognisable as the Kaaba (Ka’bah), the holiest shrine of Islam. Together the two clues mean the city is Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
