National Walking Month
May is National Walking Month. It is a campaign to encourage more people to take up walking. Evidence suggests that during the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns people have taken to walking a lot more.
Research has shown there are numerous benefits from walking including weight loss, a full-body workout, a lower risk of dementia and is as good as any anti-depressant. For more on the benefits of walking visit the Active Nation website
I have gathered together some posts from the blogs on this website that highlight places to walk in the UK during National Walking Month.
Bluebell Woods
At the time of writing the bluebell woods across the country are at their best. What better place to walk than among the carpets of blue in ancient woodland. For bluebell woods in your area visit the Woodland Trust website.
Canal Paths
Although the blog post highlighted below is for autumn canal paths can be enjoyed at any time of the year. Britain has a network of canals across the country and the old towpaths, an integral part of the system, are ideal for walking.
Coastal Paths
Being an island Britain is blessed with a long and varied coastline. For the majority of its length, there are coastal paths. Some of these take you through protected areas and many are designate long-distance paths.
Urban Walks
Our urban spaces provide plenty of spaces to walk. Parks, canals and rivers all provide opportunities for walking. There are many designated routes. like the Thames Path highlighted below, which can be used to explore a city.
Keep Walking
Wherever you are there is bound to be somewhere you can walk during National Walking Month.
Perhaps though you would like to take a short break and head off on a guided walk. HF Holidays offer a range of UK-based guided walking holidays for all abilities.
Wherever you go walking during National Holiday Month use the hashtag #WalkThisMay on social media to let people know you are walking more.
