Ice-cream at Marwell Zoo but not for humans
It’s a really hot Friday here on the south coast of England and I could really do with an ice-cream (where is the ice-cream van when you need him?). I have returned from Darwin to find the heat of the tropics in my own backyard and I am trying to keep cool and in desperate need of a dip in a pool and an ice-cream.
I then discover that just a few miles up the road at Marwell Zoo the animals are doing exactly that. As temperatures soar and records begin to fall Kushka, the new tiger is taking a dip in the pool.
Kushka is not the only one who is keeping cool. The lemurs are being treated to ice-cream treats. Marie Sawell, a nutritionist, has developed a range of pet treats and donated some to Marwell Zoo after they gave the all clear for the lemurs to cool off with an ice-cream treat.
Ice-cream is not normally part of the lemurs diet but this is no ordinary ice treat. Marie’s Billy+Margot iced treats were developed for dogs and are based around fruit, flaxseed oil and aloe vera. They will be used sparingly as enrichment treats and complement the already balanced diet the lemurs are on.
Even if I can’t keep cool at least the animals at Marwell Zoo can during this heatwave. Marwell Zoo is between Southampton and Winchester and is a great place for a family day out.
